Can You Get Dental Implants While Pregnant?

Pregnancy changes a lot about what your body can safely handle, and dental treatment is no exception. If you’re missing a tooth and expecting, here’s how timing actually factors into the decision.

Why Oral Health Matters More During Pregnancy

Hormonal shifts during pregnancy raise the risk of both gum disease and tooth decay, which is part of why routine dental checkups and good daily hygiene matter even more than usual. Research has also linked oral health to pregnancy outcomes, which is one more reason not to let dental care slide during these months.

Routine Care vs. Elective Implant Surgery

This is the distinction that matters most, and it’s easy to blur. Routine dental care, cleanings, cavity fillings, and checkups, is generally considered safe throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, and dental X-rays with proper shielding are typically considered low-risk when they’re genuinely needed. Elective implant surgery is a different category entirely. It’s not that the imaging or anesthesia involved is inherently more dangerous, it’s that an elective, plannable procedure carries risks specific to implant treatment that simply don’t apply to a routine cleaning.

Why Implant Surgery Specifically Gets Postponed

Dental implants succeed through osseointegration, the process where the implant fuses with the jawbone over several months. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect how bone heals, which introduces uncertainty into a process that depends on predictable healing. On top of that, medication options are more limited during pregnancy. Many standard pain relievers aren’t recommended, and some antibiotics used to prevent or treat infection after surgery can pose risks to a developing fetus. Combine a less predictable healing environment with a narrower set of safe medications, and postponing an elective surgical procedure is the more cautious path.

The Best Timing, If You’re Planning Ahead

Implants are best placed either before pregnancy or after childbirth. If you know a pregnancy is in your future, addressing missing teeth beforehand avoids the question altogether. If you’re already pregnant and dealing with a missing tooth, the typical plan is to wait until after delivery to begin or finish implant treatment.

If You Become Pregnant Mid-Treatment

This happens, and it doesn’t derail your care. Cleveland Implant Institute can coordinate directly with your OB, and in most cases, the remaining steps of treatment are simply completed after you’ve given birth. Your existing temporary restoration, if you have one, can typically continue functioning in the meantime.

Dental Implants Are Still a Safe, Effective Option, Just Not Right Now

None of this changes the long-term picture. Implants remain a reliable way to replace missing teeth. The only real variable is timing, and getting that timing right protects both the pregnancy and the long-term success of the implant itself.
